Ethiopia was one of the first countries to accept Christianity in the world. Interestingly enough the majority of the people are still Christian Ethiopian Orthodox. Only about one third of Ethiopian's believe in Islam. This is interesting because Egypt, which was one of the first countries in Africa to accept Christianity, has completely converted to Islam and I would've assumed that Ethiopia was converted too, however, they haven't. Ethiopia has close historical ties with all three of the world's major
Abrahamic religions. Islam in Ethiopia dates back to the founding of the religion; in 615, when a group of Muslims were counseled by Muhammad to escape persecution in
Mecca and
travel to Ethiopia via modern day Eritrea, which was ruled by
Ashama ibn Abjar, a pious Christian king. The country is also the spiritual homeland of the
Rastafari religious movement. And the Ethiopian
Aksum region was the first major empire in the world to convert to Christianity and it was one of the first countries to officially adopt
Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century.
